Butternut Carving Blocks
Butternut Carving
Wood
Quality kiln dried butternut for
the woodcarver.

Butternut
is the most commonly used wood by woodcarvers for carvings that
will be given a natural finish - not painted. Butternut
is related to walnut - it has a very nice grain
structure and is much lighter in color and weight. Butternut
is not as hard as walnut -
butternut
is soft enough to cut easily with a knife or
gouge, but hard enough to hold detail that has been carved.
Butternut
works well with hand as well as power tools.
Our butternut
is Northern grown for quality.
Butternut is very susceptible to having worm holes.
Most of our butternut is almost clear of worm holes, but
you may find some smaller ones. If you are looking for very wormy
butternut, give us a call and we will special order some for you
at no additional charge. We only sell butternut
carving blocks that we would be willing to carve ourselves.
We have a good selection in 2", 3", and 4" thick stock
(rough cut dimensions - surfacing will reduce the thickness by about 1/4" or
less) --- other dimensions are very close to exact.
We stock 12 and 16 inch long butternut blocks -
Other sizes are available on a special order basis -
call and check on availability and prices.
Due to the limited availability of butternut wood, all wood widths greater than 8 inches may be glued up.
